Jim Hubbard: Making United in Anger: A History of ACT UP

In 2001, when Sarah Schulman and I co-founded the ACT UP Oral History Project, ACT UP was largely erased from public memory. It lived in the hearts and minds of those who had fought the AIDS epidemic, but there was no easily available information, no renewed public discussion of the achievements of the AIDS activist movement. In an attempt to redress that loss, we have interviewed 128 surviving members of ACT UP and made the transcripts and video clips from those interviews available on our website, actuporalhistory.org.

These interviews complemented the collection of AIDS activist video at the New York Public Library. The collection consists of over 1,000 hours of raw footage and finished tapes made by over 30 collectives and individual videomakers. The footage has been preserved and made freely available for viewing at the library to researchers, historians, students, and anyone else who might be interested.

Sarah and I have traveled to universities, libraries, community centers, and conferences around the world to show excerpts of this material in order to encourage writers, filmmakers, and institutions to use these resources. Two prominent shows, one at Harvard University and one at the White Columns Gallery in New York, made the material even better known. As a result, as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of ACT UP this month, there is a critical mass of interest and new work being made about ACT UP, including my own film, United in Anger: A History of ACT UP, which premiered last month at the Museum of Modern Art.

I started making this film 25 years ago, 10 years ago, or three years ago, depending on how you look at it.

I first filmed ACT UP at the Lesbian & Gay Pride March in New York in June 1987. In the early 1980s, when AIDS first began devastating the gay community, I began thinking about making a film about AIDS but was stymied because I had no intention of elbowing my way into hospital rooms to show people at their most vulnerable and victimized, as the mainstream media were doing. In 1984 my ex-lover, the filmmaker Roger Jacoby, was diagnosed with AIDS. I filmed him during the last year and a half of his life. When ACT UP came along with its flamboyantly visual style of politics, I weaved these two elements together to create my film Elegy in the Streets.

I continued to film ACT UP over the years with my 16-millimeter camera, but the real heroic effort of documenting the AIDS activist movement was carried on by the dozens of AIDS activist videomakers whose footage appears in United in Anger. They worked in collectives such as Testing the Limits, DIVA TV (Damned Interfering Video Activist Television), and as individuals. This footage is a historical resource of immense value, and I am exceedingly grateful to the many videomakers who allowed me to utilize their work in United in Anger. The on-the-ground, in-the-action footage made it possible to evoke what it was like to be in the midst of an ACT UP demonstration, and what it was like to be in an ACT UP meeting. As I worked on the film, I always felt that there was a community intelligence that shaped it and made it possible.

The other element that allowed United in Anger to be made is the communal knowledge and historical analysis that comes out of the interviews that form the ACT UP Oral History Project. I used excerpts from the interviews throughout the film to provide a more complex, fuller understanding of ACT UP, and to help viewers understand the unique combination of hard work and sheer intelligence that made ACT UP so effective.

I began intensely editing United in Anger about three years ago and finished it at the end of 2011. What I have tried to convey in the film is the urgency of people who, battling a deadly epidemic that threatened their lives, their culture, and their community, chose to fight back and remake the world.

To learn more about United in Anger: A History of ACT UP, please visit the film's website, unitedinanger.com.

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, ACT UP will be demonstrating on Wall Street on April 25 at 11 a.m., demanding a tax on Wall Street to fund AIDS research. For more information, visit facebook.com/events/208718522568785.

Personal Finance Strategies For The Real World - Turnkey Loan

Work to keep your credit rating as high as possible. It is very important to keep your credit score high in order to obtain good credit cards and low interest loans. Housing rentals, utility accounts and other such services can be impacted greatly by a bad credit score. Be wise when using your credit in order to maintain a high credit score.

You will be a good trader if you know when you should let your profits keep running. It is important when doing this that you do not get too greedy. Once you make a profit on a certain trade, know when to take the money off the table.

Create a direct deposit to your savings account so that the money is going straight to your emergency fund. Automatic deduction frees you from the responsibility of remembering to save all the time, and the money you save could be a lifesaver in the case of unexpected unemployment, medical expenses, disaster or other crises.

Success in business can be directly related to money management. Capital that you invest should be well protected. If you put your profits into your capital you can build a better foundation; you need to keep a careful watch onthem so you can see more profits. Set standards for profits and what you put into capital.

By practicing patience in your personal finances, you can save a significant amount of money. People clamor to buy the newest electronics without even thinking about the cost. The prices of such items tend to drop rapidly, though, so you should wait a bit before purchasing. You will then have much more money available to purchase other products you like.

Prevention is the best remedy for credit card debt. Before you put anything on your credit card, step back and really think about it. Imagine how long it would take to pay down the balance if you only pay the minimum each month. If you cannot pay a charge off within a month, you probably shouldn?t be purchasing the item of service, especially if it?s something you don?t truly need.

Take note of what you did to get into your financial mess in the first place. Spending years paying off debt should be a lesson in and of itself. You should strive to avoid debt in your future. If your last salary was less than you desired, learn how to negotiate a better salary. If you are forced into taking a low paying job, don?t spend like you did when you had a high paying job. When talking about your own finances, it?s best to treat each lesson as a valuable one. Know that what you know today is more then you knew yesterday, and every bit of knowledge puts you in a better financial situation in the future.

A credit score of 740 or more will make your mortgage application process a lot easier. With a score in this range, you can net far better interest rates. If it proves necessary, invest the time you need to get your credit score up. Applying for a large loan, such as a mortgage, should be put off until you have improved your credit rating.

Follow your credit rating. You can also check your report for free. Make sure that you do this twice a year to ensure that there are not any unauthorized changes on your report, or someone has not committed identity theft using your name and information.

Start saving now! Saving money is one the keys to financial security, as well as a happy life. Start saving now, not tomorrow! You can tell yourself that having to save is part of your bill paying process. By doing this, you will start to build up an emergency fund.

Establish a realistic budget and stick to it. Whether you use a pen and paper or a downloadable budget tracker, the key is to let your budget help you form good spending habits and change bad ones. Once you know what you?re spending money on, you can decide whether you want to cut any of it out. This type of planning helps you reduce spending and refrain from spending money you can?t afford on luxuries.

Maintain your income tax records on a daily basis so that you don?t have to locate or compile financial documentation at the last minute. Keep all your receipts and other tax documents organized in the same place throughout the year, and you will be ready when tax time rolls around.

All debt is not bad. Debts that can work in your favor are things like real estate. Real estate is good because, for the most part, they increase in value over time and the loan interest is tax deductible. Another good debt is paying for college. Student loans are an investment in the future that may have attractive interest rates and deferred repayment.

Dealing with difficult personal finances can frustrate you at times, but your efforts will pay off in the long run. Talking to financial advisers and carefully studying financial techniques is all it takes. The ideas you just learned can help you keep your finances in order.

ERIC BARTELS ? Blog Archive ? NLP: Machine Guns for ...

Posted: March 20th, 2012 | Author: Eric Bartels | Filed under: Stories | No Comments ?

The last couple of month I wrote a couple of Facebook entries about neuro linguistic programmering (NLP) here in the Netherlands. I am a trained NLP practioner, master en trainer myself, but increasingly I get an uneasy feeling about the way NLP is used and exploited here in the Netherlands. I read stories written by well known Dutch NLP trainers that not only lack intellectual coherency and congruency, but also show a shocking manipulation of others and a strong abuse of power. Furthermore, instead of treating NLP as a flexible toolbox, these trainers turn NLP into a church with rituals and different schools that discredit each other. These observations have made me realize that there is a fundamentally wrong assumption behind NLP. Let me explain.

Grinder and Bandler were both part of the counterculture in California in the sixties and seventies of the last century. This counterculture arose on both sides of the ocean, but was particular strong in the US due to the Vietnam war. This caused a strong antiestablishment sentiment in the US, that was strongest in California. Grinder and Bandler, but also Steve Jobs of Apple, were part of that culture. It made Steve grow a computer company to break the power of the IBM?s of this world and Grinder and Bandler to suck the genius out of three psychoanalysts to break the power of the psychoanalytical establishment. They called it NLP.

The NLP movement was based on the assumption that the world would be a better place of we could disconnect the skillset from the person, thus enabling every human being to become his or her own psychotherapist. And that is exactly what Grinder and Bandler did: they modelled the psychoanalytical genius in a toolbox so any human being can learn that in 2 times 11 days (NLP practitioner and NLP master practitioner).

There is a strong belief behind that thinking that nobody ever addresses.

The belief is that a human being is a set of skills sets. So if you isolate a certain skill set from a person and teach it to somebody else, the somebody else has the same qualifications as the original person. I think that assumption is simply wrong. To address that, I wrote in an article on a NLP forum that ?..NLP is great and powerful, but it is also like giving a box of machine guns to an bunch of fucking chimpanzees..?

To make it more practical, I believe that Milton Erickson was not only a great hypnotist because of the specific skill sets Grinder and Bandler distilled from Erickson, but because of something else. And that something else is ?intention? or the ?why? of behaviour. In the western world, thanks to theologian William of Ockam, philosopher Rene Descartes and biologist Charles Darwin, we have removed the why from our world. If you want a why, go to a church or believe in God. Without God, no why. So evolution is just an accident and life is only direct experience. Enjoy it, but don?t try to make any sense of it as it is senseless.

With his ?final cause? Greek philosopher Aristotle developed a framework in which why exists without a God. I think he is right and will be proven right. I have already written about that in other articles, so I will leave it here.

NLP is a toolbox that operates within the ?no-why? framework of Ockam-Descartes-Darwin: it works on the ?how? and ?what? in relationship with the ?where? (context). But it denies the why. Last week a NLP trainer visited me. He had done any NLP and hypnosis training you can ever imagine. But he was depressed and wanted me to help him. What he said did not surprise me: ?Eric, I know all this stuff, I can cure phobias and other stuff, hell, I have even left my family as they didn?t want me to do this kind of work, but?I still don?t know who I am and why I am here?? Now, of course, this is one person, but he is not the only one telling me this. Now we can tell these people that why is an illusion and they should stop looking, but to them it is real.

But this is not the most prominent point I would like to make.

The most prominent point I would like to make is that if there is no why, there also is no such thing as ethics and morality. There are only rules to govern our whyless how-what-where drive to survive and satisfy our egotistical needs. But that is not the same as ethics and morality, although often mistaken for it. Ethics and morality transcend egotistical need-satisfaction. They stretch out to the greater whole, the larger system. Throwing your garbage out of the car while driving serves your egotistical needs and is therefore in a whyless universe acceptable until a formal law says otherwise. In a why-universe it is not acceptable as it disturbs the larger context. Ethical and moral behaviour takes the larger context in consideration as every (organic) system plays a (why-)role in the grand scheme of things.

In a whyless universe we can take a skill set from person A, put it in person B and person B will then behave like person A. In a why-universe this is impossible as the intention or why of person A and person B differ and these system-intentions are not replicable. If you want to perform hypnosis like Milton Erickson does, you can learn and integrate his skill sets, but not his system-intention (the intention, why or motive of the system). System intentions are personal, already there and can be activated, but cannot be replicated.

The behavior of people is why (motive/intention) plus how (skillsets) plus what (behavior) plus where (context), as I try to explain in my books.

We in the West, especially in the US, believe we can export democracy. We really believe if people in Uganda of Afghanistan get free elections, their society will turn into a flourishing democracy and their civilians will turn into freedom-loving democrats. That is the same mistake in thinking that is used in NLP. It just doesn?t work that way. If human beings don?t have the right intention (why) with the accompanying ethics and morality, democracy for them will not work. They need an evolutionary development of the why to be able to live like a democrat.

That is why I wrote??..NLP is great and powerful, but it is also like giving a box of machine guns to an bunch of fucking chimpanzees..?. If you give machine-guns to biological entities that don?t have the sufficient developed intention, ethics and mortality, they will misuse it , manipulate and destroy. The same happens, in my observation, with NLP. Any idiot can follow a NLP training, regardless of his or her intention.

And I have met a lot of these idiots.

People who were computer-programmer, plumber, accountant, salesperson or florist, all turned into NLP coaches and trainers. People who were completely fucked up themselves, depressed, living on the streets, high on cocaine, booze,?all turned into NLP coaches and trainers.?Now I will not say these people cannot be great therapists of change agents, they can of course, but my point is there is no supervision, there is no emphasis on a certain intention. I must say I sometimes pity all the patients treated by these so called NLP coaches.

I have read entries on Facebook by NLP trainers, some of them locally famous and with large NLP institutions, that not only lack the intellectual capacity to form one intelligent and coherent sentence, but also show a scary use of manipulation and power. I must admit though, that most of these idiots are Bandler trained trainers. And this doesn?t surprise me as Bandlers work is much more based on manipulation (hypnosis) than Grinders work, who focusses more on states and self-help application of NLP.

NLP is part of a much larger crisis in the Western world that is in reality a transition from a typical how-driven survival-of-the-fittest industrial world to a why-driven world of meaning and purpose. NLP is a nice set of tools to be used by people with the right intention, ethics and morality within a larger why-framework dedicated to help people and companies find and activate their true why and grow that into a congruent and healthy existence.

Precisely what I try to achieve with The Plan Principle.

North Korea vows satellite launch, with rocket that could reach Hawaii

North Korea says it wants to peacefully use space. Analysts say the regime wants to test a missile that could deliver a nuclear warhead to the US.

North Korea vowed today to launch a satellite from a long-range missile despite the protests of what it called ?hostile forces? including the US, Japan, and South Korea.

The North?s determination to go ahead with the launch around the time of the April 15 centennial?of the birth of founding leader Kim Il-sung most likely sets the course for another cycle of international recriminations while the North refuses to talk seriously about giving up its nuclear program.

North Korea defended its defiance of demands by the US and others to cancel the launch as exercise of its ?right to use space for peaceful purposes.?? As explained by Pyongyang?s Korean Central News Agency, ?The satellite ?launch for scientific researches?.can by no means be a monopoly of specified countries.?

Officials and analysts alike, however, strongly doubt if the North?s goal is to launch a satellite. The obvious purpose, they say, is for North Korea to test the latest version of a missile with a range that could deliver a small nuclear warhead as far as Hawaii, Alaska ? or even the US west coast.

?We all know their purpose is to have missiles,? says Choi Jin-wook, long-time North Korea expert at the Korea Institute for National Unification. ?I?m not sure they if they can put a satellite into orbit.?

If anything seems certain, however, it is that the launch will undermine the stalled six-party talks on reaching a deal for North Korea to abandon its nuclear program. The talks, chaired by China, including envoys from the US, Japan, Russia, and North and South Korea, were last held in Beijing in December 2008.

Hopes were high for resumption of the talks after US and North Korean envoys, meeting in Beijing, reached agreement on February 29 for North Korea to abide by a moratorium on missile and nuclear tests. North Korea last test-fired a long-range missile in April 2009 and conducted its second underground nuclear test the next month.

North Korea?s announcement on Friday, however, set off alarm bells from Washington to Tokyo and the capitals of Europe. China, North Korea?s sole ally, the source of almost all its oil and much of its food and other supplies, expressed concern while Russia warned against a launch.

North Korea in its statement today did not mention the comments from Beijing and Moscow while going to considerable lengths to describe its plan as ?a precious result of scientific researches conducted by scientists and technicians.? The mission, said the report on the Korean Central News Agency, is ?to develop and utilize working satellites indispensable for the country's economic development, pursuant to the government's policy for the peaceful development and use of space.?

The report backed up that statement by claiming to have ?strictly abided by relevant international regulations and practice? in launching two other ?space stations.? In fact, US scientists say the North failed to put satellites into orbit in two previous long-range missile launches ? and even question whether satellites were attached to the missiles, which fell into the Pacific Ocean.

Nonetheless, Choi Jin-wook believes North Korea will admit inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency for the first time in three years, as promised on February 29. He predicts US and North Korean officials will go into more talks before the US begins sending 240,000 tons of food aid, also as agreed on.

?North Korea might be in big trouble after the missile test,? says Choi, ?but we all know Washington cannot do much as long as China is behind them.??
