SEC spring football analysis: A different kind of March Madness

Amid the flash and fanfare that is the start of the NCAA tournament, March?s other madness is shifting into full gear this week.

Football teams around the new-14 team SEC are gearing up for the annual rite of spring practice, a 15-day marathon that ends with widely attended spring games watched closely by fans for a hint of hope to come in the fall.

LSU, Alabama and Missouri already have gotten an early start to spring practice, and four more -- South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida and Vanderbilt -- get under way this week.

Auburn and Georgia will wait until their football players get back from this week?s spring break to finally hit the practice field, but both teams are scheduled to start next week.

No matter what time a team starts, every SEC team has questions it has to answer and weak spots to address before the summer starts the long, slow road back to fall Saturdays and the pursuit of a championship.

With that in mind, the Ledger-Enquirer has analyzed the goals, strengths and weaknesses of all 14 teams as spring practice begins.

After all, when spring practice starts, the spring game -- and the first glimpse of the 2012 season -- is not far behind.
