New plug-in blurs your Facebook photos so strangers can?t see them

McAfee social protectionWhile most of us have a Facebook profile by now, not all of us are keen on making every aspect of our life public knowledge as participation. Given how Facebook is built around sharing just about every detail about our lives, that can be tricky to reconcile. That's why computer security firm McAfee has designed Social Protection, a browser add-on designed to keep strangers from viewing your personal pictures.

The browser plug-in will blur all your photos, allowing only those who you approve to see them.?Once protected, photos can only be viewed by those who have the plug-in installed. The plug-in will also alert you when a friend uploads a photo of you, even if you haven't been tagged in it, so you can request it be removed or similarly protected. You will even be able to prevent others from taking screenshots of your photos using the print screen function.

Social Protection will be available by the end of August for?Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome on the PC. The service will soon expand to Mac users, with iOS and Android users getting the functionality by the end of the year. Of course, you don't have to wait for this app to protect yourself on Facebook?? you can edit your Facebook privacy settings to decide who can and can't see your photos today.

Some rain relief from drought; storm on horizon

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Light showers with some locally heavier amounts fell on the U.S. Midwest crop belt overnight, which will provide some relief to crops and livestock from the worst drought in a half century, an agricultural meteorologist said Thursday.

"There were some 1-inch rains in areas of Nebraska, Kansas and southern Minnesota, and the usual 0.10 to 0.50 inch elsewhere," said Andy Karst, meteorologist for World Weather Inc.

Another buildup of heat was expected next week in the central and western Midwest, with highs in the 90s to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which will add further stress to crops.

But, "We may be shifting gears. Tropical Depression 5 which is east of the Caribbean Sea now may land in Texas. That is about 10 days away, but that could have an impact on Midwest weather. We'll have keep an eye on that," he said.

If the tropical storm intensifies and makes landfall on the U.S. Coast, there could be some drought-relieving rainfall in mid-August for the Midwest.

However, it would come too late to benefit the corn crop and most of the soybean crop.

Weather forecasting models that meteorologists use to make their predictions were in agreement on Thursday, in contrast to some days when the European and U.S. models showed divergent patterns.

"There isn't a striking difference today. The GFS (U.S.) model has a stronger ridge of high pressure than the European model, but unlike some days they're aligned pretty well today," Karst said.

An atmospheric high pressure ridge centered over the Plains and Midwest has been blocking moisture from moving from the Gulf into the Midwest, leading to a buildup of heat and drought.

Commodity Weather Group (CWG) on Thursday said temperatures would warm into the 90s F for all but the northwestern corner of the Midwest by Friday and Saturday, with 100s F most likely in Missouri and Kansas.

And the extended outlook for later next week remained near to above normal for temperatures with the severe heat retreating to mainly the Plains.

Chicago Board of Trade corn and soybean futures prices soared to record highs in July and turned volatile this week as weather patterns began to indicate some moderation in the severity of the drought.

The spreading drought has been cutting into crop conditions and analysts have been slashing production prospects for corn and soybeans almost daily.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday rated 24 percent of the corn crop in good-to-excellent condition as of Sunday, and 29 percent of the soybean crop in good-to-excellent shape, both down 2 percentage points from the previous week.

The ratings for each were the worst since the comparable week in 1988, another year of severe drought in the nation's crop-growing mid-section.

Analysts and crop experts said further declines in condition ratings could be expected next week because the weather still stressed each crop.

The domestic corn crop shrunk another 2.5 percent over the past week, but the modest decline suggested damage from drought may be nearing an end, a Reuters poll of analysts showed on Tuesday.

The soybean crop was likewise getting smaller. Hot and dry weather forecast for the Midwest farm belt for the next two weeks could do more damage to the crop, according to the analysts.

IRS may have sent $5 billion to identity thieves

Investigators say the Internal Revenue Service may have delivered more than $5 billion in refund checks to identity thieves who filed fraudulent tax returns for 2011.

They estimate that another $21 billion could make its way to ID thieves' pockets over the next five years.

The Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration says the IRS is detecting far fewer fraudulent tax refund claims than actually occur. Thieves assume the identity of a dead person, child or someone else who normally wouldn't file a tax return.

For example, investigators found one single address in Michigan that was used to file 2,137 separate tax returns seeking a total of more $3.3 million in refunds. In other cases, hundreds of refunds were deposited into the same bank account.?

Augusta area new-home construction up 11 percent | The Augusta ...

Permits for new-home construction in the Augusta area are up by 132 from the end of July compared with the end of July 2011, according to data from Construction Week, which tracks the metro area.

Nationwide, new-home starts rose by 6.9 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 760,000 units in June, according to recently released figures from Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau. That is the fastest pace of new home construction since October 2008.

Phil Corley, the vice president of marketing for Crown Communities, which has built Augusta communities including Sage Creek and Magnolia Valley, attributes the increase in new homes to steadied consumer confidence.

?Consumer confidence is starting to pick up a little bit, and that means a lot,? he said.

Profit margins are thinner than they have been in the past, Corley said, but it?s still a good time for the new home industry.

?We?ve been able to maintain a good balance of value and profit,? he said.

Doug Reese, the senior vice president and general manager for Blanchard and Calhoun, has been in real estate for more than 20 years and said he has never seen new-home sales as high as they are now.

According to Reese, more than 50 percent of the real estate closings over the past year were newly constructed homes, a far cry from the 15 to 20 percent he is used to seeing.

Though myriad factors contribute to the national uptick in home construction, Reese said Augusta owes its growth to steady employers such as Fort Gordon and Plant Vogtle. They move people to the area, pay good wages and add stability to the economy, he said.

?Industry is driving people here,? he said. ?We?re fortunate that we have that.?

According to permit data, there have been 1,362 residential construction permits pulled for Richmond, Columbia and Aiken counties. There have been 172 housing starts in Richmond County this year, 53 more than last year at this time. Builders have been putting up 848 homes in Columbia County this year, 144 more than a year ago. Aiken, however, is down 65 from last year.

Most buyers would take a new home over a previously lived-in home, Reese said, and low interest rates and reasonable prices in the Augusta market make it easy to buy new.

?New construction is a bargain, and labor and materials are at an all-time low,? he said. ?With cheap money and affordable cost of labor and materials, why not??

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the growth in new home sales is the result of an increase in serious buyers to the market and higher consumer confidence.

?This is one more piece of evidence that housing is starting to take back its traditional role of leading the nation out of recession, and tracks with our forecast for continued improvement in new construction through the end of this year,? said the association?s chief economist, David Crowe. ?While many challenges continue to weigh down the housing recovery ? including those related to builders? and buyers? access to credit, poor appraisals and the number of distressed properties in certain markets ? production of single-family homes is now the strongest it has been since 2010 due to rising consumer demand brought on by improving market conditions.?
