We can?t emphasize enough the importance of conserving the environment to ensure a sustainable livelihood for all of us. Environment protection also makes up a crucial pillar in running businesses and that?s why we, at Samsung, have taken numerous initiatives for green management.?

Samsung embracing the blue planet

Earlier this month, we have taken our initiative further to announce SMART Green Management efforts in meeting the growing demand of the era for balanced development of the economy, environment and society.
The SMART Green Management strategy consists of the following five concepts:?
- Sustainability: execute green management as core strategy for sustainable management
- Market: explore new markets by solving environmental problems
- Advantage: seek additional advantage of creating profit through environmental conservation
- Restructuring: conduct business restructuring to be more focused on environmentally friendly strategy
- Transparency: strengthen transparency to better communicate and cooperate with society

The new initiative was announced at the seminar hosted by Samsung Global Environment Research Center at the 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress (WCC), which took place on the Korean island of Jeju between Sept. 6 and 15. It is the world?s biggest environmental conference held every four years.
Samsung sponsored the event by providing 1,500 Galaxy Note 10.1 devices and about 60 LED Smart TVs not only to make it more convenient for the participants to access the Internet, but also to eliminate the use of paper by enabling them to take notes on the devices and send questions to the presenters real time electronically. And we all know less use of paper means more trees saved!

?We expect SMART Green Management will provide new directions for a company in pursuing green management, finding new growth engines from solving environmental problems and implementing corporate social responsibilities related to the environment,? according to Mr. JaeBong Paik, president of Samsung Global Environment Research Center, dedicated to research into the environment and safety.
Samsung Global Environment Research Center was established in 1993, attesting to the long history of green management at Samsung. Among various initiatives undertaken as part of our commitment to creating a prosperous world for the humanity and preserving the global environment is declaration of Samsung Green Management Vision 2020 in January 2011.

The vision calls for becoming a global top company in green management by upholding the two values of ?pursuing sustainable growth? and ?practicing social responsibility.? We try to realize this vision by achieving mainly three objectives: preserving resources and reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions; leading the global green management standards and markets; and preventing the environment and safety incidents and ensuring business continuity.
Conserving biodiversity also makes up an important part of our green management and that?s why Samsung Global Environment Research Center hosted a seminar on the topic of ?Biodiversity and the Corporate Role.? Representatives from the World Resources Institute, an environmental think-tank, and global companies such as Hitachi and Dow Chemical Company got valuable moments to discuss various corporate programs aimed at sustaining biodiversity during the seminar.
Our Samsung Electronics affiliate also got a chance to introduce its numerous biodiversity conservation efforts launched across the globe from conserving the Amazon rainforest and its natives and tree planting in China and India to cleaning up the river in the Philippines and building bird houses in Slovakia!
